Alex (14), Melanie (12), Kristina (10), and Ben (6) - Fall 2008
More pictures: Melanie's journey through treatment Welcome to our web page which was created to keep family and friends updated about Melanie. Melanie was diagnosed on July 25, 2002 at age 6-1/2 with t-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). She was treated on CCG-1991, and finished treatment on September 20, 2004. Melanie was one of the lucky ones who seemed to breeze through treatment with very few complications. She had the usual side effects that most kids experience - hair loss, steroid effects, tons of pills to swallow, multiple clinic visits, etc., but she was very fortunate to avoid most of the major problems that can happen to kids on chemo. During her 26 months of treatment Melanie: swallowed over 3400 pills... received 115 pokes (her Broviac was taken out at the start of LTM)... went to over 30 clinic visits... received 26 different drugs... bravely endured 18 spinal taps with chemo... spent 14 days inpatient in the hospital... had 2 visits to the ER... needed 0 transfusions (almost unheard of in kids on chemo)... You did it Melanie!
Journal
Wednesday, December 24, 2008 Merry Christmas!
How can it be December already? It’s been a good year, but it just flew by…
I'm not sure how it happened, but Alex (14) is a freshman this year. They aren’t kidding when they say your kids will be grown before you know it! He decided to try tennis this year, and after practicing this summer with his Grandpa he made the junior varsity tennis team and shows some great promise. Alex also joined the debate team, and is taking (gulp) driver’s training. :-)
Melanie (12) is in 7th grade, and continues to be healthy. She’s a sweet girl, and has been a fantastic help with Ben this year. She still loves everything having to do with ‘art’ and will spend hours painting or drawing. She’s definitely a typical ‘pre-teen’ girl, and getting into makeup and fashion. Mel enjoys spending time with her friends, and has also shown a real interest in cooking this year.
Kristina (10) is in 5th grade – her last year in elementary school (sob). I can’t believe she’ll be in middle school next year. She’s got the most vivid and quirky personality, and constantly acts out different characters or scenarios. She wants to be a teacher, and spends hours ‘playing school’ with Ben. We think she’d make a good actress, but we’ll see… Kristina also joined a travel soccer team this fall and loved it – she’ll be playing again in the spring.
Benjamin (6) is in Kindergarten this year. He’s ‘almost’ reading – just needs to get that confidence up. He played baseball in the spring and soccer in the fall. He decided that soccer was ‘his sport’ and can’t wait to play again. Ben continues to entertain us with his take on things, and we just love spending time with him.
I'm living and breathing nursing school, and that’s about all I have time for! It’s very time consuming, but I’ve got a terrific support system here at home, so it’s been doable. I absolutely love it, and can’t wait to graduate in June. I’ll spend the summer studying for the state boards, and hopefully will be a RN by August or so. I hope to work in our local ER (where I’ve been a tech for the past few years), but may look into some different options too.
Rick was promoted to the Director of Planning this year at Wolverine Power, and has been busy learning his new duties, which primarily involve long-term financial planning, strategic initiatives, and renewable energy programs. He also really enjoyed our annual trip to Michigan State for a football game, and also made it to a few Red Wings hockey games.
We got our basement finished this summer, and it’s been so nice having the additional room. We did manage a long weekend in Chicago in March to show the kids some of the museums and a trip to Mackinaw Island in June for a few days for Rick’s work conference. It’s been a good year, and we feel very fortunate to have been blessed with health and happiness this year.
Take care all, and have a wonderful, safe, and happy holiday season!
