Jared LaCombe

Welcome to Jared LaCombes' Web Page. It has been provided to keep our family and friends updated about Jared's progress. Jared was diagnosed with a rare form of child hood leukemia on February 3, 2004. (ALL with Philadelphia Chromosome). He underwent an unrelated chord blood transplant (stem cell), on May 5, 2004. Jared then suffered from a stroke, caused by an infection, on February 6, 2005. He spent over six month's in the hospital, two of those at a rehabilition hospital. Jared fought for over 6 months trying to regain strength and the ability to walk, however, one more twist in the road put Jared in the hospital in May 2006. The doctors didn't know what was wrong at Florida Hospital so they air lifted Jared to Duke, once again. A brain biopsy showed a large blood clot still present from the initial stroke in 2005. The blood clot was removed and Jared prevailed once again! Jared has been back home since October 2006 and continues to fight his fight. He has started walking with a walker but still unable to use his left arm and hand. We are so thankful to God and to the wonderful doctors who have proved theirselves to be a gift from God to Jared. Thank you Dr. Kurtzberg, Dr. Hajjar and Dr. Fuches. We are forever grateful!!

Hi Everyone,

I can't believe I am finally updating. For anyone who does not check on us personally,I may not be able to have time to tell everything tonight. I have not updated in so long! I really apologize as we are so thankful for everyone who continues to check in on Jared and our family.
We have really been doing fine until around Thanksgiving
of 08. Jared got a virus and wasn't able to fight it completely. We had to get him back up to Duke. Don and
Jared went to Duke on 1-13-09 & are still there. Jared
has been in and out of the hospital and he initially had a bacterial infection when he arrived at Duke. They took care
of that but they are saying he has what is called Graft vs. host disease. It is really hard to understand but it has to do with his body trying to fight the transplant. The
doctors are trying to get it under control by trying different medicines.
Don and I sold the restaurant last year in March. I was able to find work again and now manage an apartment community over by Disney. When Jared got sick, Don went
up to North Carolina and I have been going up as much as I can. It is really difficult not having them here and it has now been three month's that they have been there. The
doctors keep changing the time frame of when they will allow Jared to come home. He is having to get platelets and red blood cells on a regular basis. That is probally the biggest concern right now that is interfering with him coming home. We know Jared is in the right place because the doctors at Duke have dealt with this problem more than any other hospital.
We are so thankful for Mike and Wanda who are again having our annual Jared LaCombe golf tournament. It will be on May 11th. It is not likely that Jared will be home so Don is planning on coming here for the tournament and I am going to NC to stay with Jared. We are so blessed to have the community and family support that we have had over the past five years. Yes, it has been five years since Jared's Leukemia diagnosis. Jared has been through so much and honestly we are grateful to have our son! Please pray for our family and others who have to see their children suffer from childhood cancer. We couldn't do this without your support and Jared and I will miss seeing you all at Tuskawilla but know that our hearts are there.
I'll try to update again soon. We also need to thank a charity called Hunter's Hope who have donated the use of an apartment for some of the time that Jared has been out patient. Thank you!
God Bless,
Lynn, Don and Jared
