Wow now we feel very special to have had a mention in your journal!! I think we can go, providing everything goes smoothly with passports etc. The children are so excited and I still can't believe you managed to get it arranged for us!!! Thank you so much. Good to hear Rachel has managed sports day this year! And even better to hear you are planing a summer full of normal stuff!! We are planning lots of rest - but lots of fun too we hope! Ben was in a concert last week with his Junior school, he really shone and smiled all the way through. I was so proud of him. But at the end lots of other parents were a little tearful because of the beautiful songs etc. And I just thought what are they so tearful about, my little boy is up there and he so nearly wasn't!! Just shows that life still goes on in the normal way for everyone else and yet every little thing for us, be it sports day, music concerts, even everyday schooling is such a milestone and a huge hurdle both physically and emotionally to climb. I was so upset that we missed you in Sydney, but it sounds like you had a lovely time - and how clever was Santa tracking you down on the other side of the world?! We had a wonderful camping holiday and stayed in a place called 'Pretty Beach' it truely was Pretty, there were kangaroos everywhere and at night we had to tie up all our rubbish and make sure we didn't leave anything lying around as the cheeky possums came in search of food! We are now back in our house and enjoying the summer holidays, the boys live in the surf and I am loving our new pool! Can't wait to see you in England this year (2008). Send my love to everyone!

Dear Alison, Thanks for the lovely message. I am glad you liked the website but really it was thanks to you that we started it. Your website inspired me to start ours. It was difficult to begin with as I had to backtrack a lot of information but I was glad that I did as so many people have found it a useful tool to keep them updated with Ben's progress. And as you said it is vitally important that they have a small insight into how we are feeling. I do find it very scary to read other websites like yours because you read comments which are how you feel to the letter. For example yours back in August when you had had your appointment with Dr Madi - no champagne, no celebrations etc etc. I really felt like I was there with you. All very emotional really. I feel as though Ben has basically lost his childhood. It truly is a nightmare. Anyway thanks again for the lovely message. I really appreciated it and hope you will keep up to date with Ben's progress. Have a great weekend, hope your girls are well and you never know we might bump into each other one day. Hi Rachel and family. Our son Jack was diagnosed with ALL on 6th July 2007. Jack will be 5 at Christmas and like you has been very brave. I know you have got rid of your Hickman line well Jack has only just got his three weeks ago and thinks his 'wiggly' is great as it means no more needles! Jack was due to start at his big boy school a few weeks ago and last week he went in to his class for a morning and had a lovely time. Hope your Ball goes well - you look lovely in your photo. To Rachel and family, you do not know me but I have been reading your website with interest because our son Ben (also a Smith!!) was diagnosed with ALL in March of this year and is also being treated at LRI It is amazing to read your journal page by page as so many of the entries are identical to our current days, feelings and anxieties. Ben is also on Regimen C following slow response and being 95% full of Leukaemia at the start. While some of your entries are painful to read, e.g. reading where we are now with treatment which was somewhere in 2005 for you, it gives me great hope to hear that you have come to the end of your treatment and are still doing well. Hi Rachel - I had the same problems with my clamps so we put small elastic bands around them to keep them closed and it worked - hope this is helpful.

Dear Alison, Paul and the two Miss Smith's (I was one once!)
I read with so many mixed feelings of your recent updates - the highs and lows - and have been thinking about you all. But when I saw the photo's today of the quilt, it and Rachel look wonderful, sometimes Alison you do us all so much good and focus us to think about others during our busy lives. Earlier this week my Leukaemia Research Magazine from Great Ormond Street arrived in the post and it's made me wonder if Rachel's lovely photo's with the quilt and the news about Jemima could be included in their next publication, keeping the Leukaemia Research profile high about our local people....just a thought. Meanwhile I send you all good wishes for a happy and 'sunny time' this summer. Then you know what starts again in the Autumn.
P.S. I had already paid a visit to the Cancer Shop - Wishes - in Melton and you are right it's lovely. (The volunteer staff were having trouble with the new till - just like us)!!

Happy Belated Birthday Rachel. We just had a couple of warm weeks here in Vail, which reminded me of comencing training last year for the ride!! Then I realised I had forgotten your birthday, sorry! We've been happy to read your great progress and look forward to seeing it continue. Your phone was very busy last night and I wonder why?!!!
The front page headlines in the Leicester Mercury could not be better, and what a lovely surprise it was on Sunday to see a birthday girl and a VERY WELL girl. That was a special surprise, plus lots of family.
Now back down to earth - the Charity Christmas Card shop sold over �1000 of cards over Melton's special weekend and I do hope you managed to see the beautiful trees in St. Mary's Church.

omg!! how weird can you get...I'm in hospital too!!! Ive posted on miltchat, my hairs all coming out too :(. My neuts are 0.03. The IV's arent doing much as I'm spiking still, wont be out until at least Sat. Hope you and rach are doing ok. No beds on the oncology ward here, am on cardiac unit, but its nicer and shared room rather than the usual nightingale ward. Only just got a hospital laptop and I hate them as everythings blocked here too!!

Hope you are all well, wierd, this time on the steriods im obsessed with food too! (I delayed mine a week so I could go to london) Had a FAB week! College is really tough at the moment, going to see a shrink at the hospital soon, should help! My bloods are great at the moment, still on 100% three weeks later and looks like that virus has FINALLY shifted (fingers crossed as always (!) No clinic until next friday, my second two weekly visit. Expecting to have the oramorph out again this week though after the vinc. Sick of all this now really! BBC are still in touch, it all depends when I'm shceduled to finish-do you know rach's finishing date? My consulant needs to work mine out, started treatment on the 29th march 2005 but began maint. in april, I have to finish sometime next may to get on the documentary. Hmmm well enough of my rambling! Am busy planing my clicsargent charity ball next may/june. You're all invited of course if you aren't skiing!!

Don't worry, i won't stop signing. Alison, you're not supposed to cry when you read my diary!! You're best not to read it this week then. I had my first scan in 18 months today. I cried like a baby for half an hour refusing for the doctors to put a canula in, but had it done in the end. I should get the full results next week, but at a quick look everything looks ok.
Do you think a beauty day would help Rachel? Maybe if you get some friends round and do some nail painting, kiddy make-up and then got bobbles and coloured bits for their hair would help her loose the wig. It's worth a try. Sorry i can't be more helpful with anything else. I'm glad Rachel is doing so well though.

Really pleased to hear you all had a good holiday - you all deserve it.

Just wanted to drop a line about ideas to encourage Rachel to remove her wig. Would she be interested in wearing 'Alice bands' with her new hair. It doesn't matter what length your hair is, they always look pretty. Charlotte loves them and it is a real treat for her to go out and pick her own to wear. Claires Accessories in the Shires, in the city centre, have a good range at low prices. Maybe if she could choose one or two as an incentive to lose her wig. It may be worth a try.

Glad you had a good holiday. Don't worry Rachel about the cap/wig. Get rid of it when you're ready. Once your hair has been growing for a few weeks, it won't stop! Use baby conditioner on it. I found that helped.

Yeah, no wig! You'll love it.
You'll have a great time at Harrods if you go back. I bet it's brilliant at christmas. I hope to go back then, maybe i'll see you there! You must visit the pet section next time. They even said i could take Molly and Daizy in to be dressed up! You can just imagine them there, can't you?
After a while the doctors appointments get less frequent. I only see my doctor now about twice a year, and i was as bad as it gets. I'm not sure if i'm helping here!
Anyway, i'll be back soon. I hope someone else has signed the guest book by then, it looks like i'm stalking you! I'm not, honest!
