A Journal for Sam

Wading in Lightning Lake.

I'm stronger than you think, mama.

Sam, age 4

SAM'S STORY

On May 30, 2004, at the age of 3, Sam was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia, and was placed on a chemotherapy protocol entitled CCG 1991 Augmented, involving 3 years and 3 months of chemotherapy.

Sam is now 7 years old, and he completed his chemotherapy in August of 2007. He is active, gregarious and we are all now enjoying life off treatment. For those of you who have been following our journey, we thank you always for surrounding us with your love and care.

Feel free to sign our guestbook and let Sam know you're thinking about him!

Journal

Monday, August 4, 2008 9:39 PM CDT

It's midsummer already, and we're deep into the traditional activities of the season - swimming, beaches, backyard sprinklers, bike riding... It's only a shame that the season is so short.

We had a wonderful BC/Alberta road trip, and one little tidbit that I don't want to forget: While eating one night at Boston Pizza in Fernie, we ordered the kids the side of steamed vegetables, and Sam actually ate some green beans:

I was really glad to have my camera handy, because the moment when a green vegetable voluntarily crossed his lips was a moment I really wanted to capture on film. Those of you who have been following my tales of woe and angst about Sam's eating will know what a thrilling moment it was.

Of course, before anyone gets too excited, I will say that Sam retains a great deal of suspicion about food in general. He still has a list of approved foods, and is reluctant to expand beyond that list. However, ever so slowly, that list is getting longer, and we're happy for whatever we can get!

While we were in Calgary, we were delighted to have a chance to catch up in person with Mac and his family. Besides having lots of fun riding horses and swimming in the creek, Patty and I exchanged stories about Sam and Mac's post-chemo eating woes. I was jealous at the time of the fact that Mac will eat bacon. Ahh, I'd be thrilled if Sam would eat bacon. But now, I have the wonderful green-bean-eating episode to share. Slowly, but surely, I'm sure both of these boys will learn the joys of eating a wide variety of foods!

All our best to all of you, and hope the summer is warm and sunny wherever you are.

Love,
Jennifer, Lori, Sam, Noah and Juliet
